To Third-Year Undergraduates Wishing to Join Our Laboratory

At the Aoki Media Sensing Laboratory, we energetically pursue research in computer vision, pattern recognition, and artificial intelligence systems based on image sensing technology that robustly extracts, measures, and recognizes meaningful information from images and video. In recent years, we have greatly expanded our research fields, including edge AI utilizing new vision sensors such as event cameras, physical AI addressing understanding and generation of robot and human movements, multimodal AI integrating diverse information such as language and sound with images and video, and space × AI merging satellite remote sensing with AI. All these endeavors are rooted in a "practical spirit," with a strong awareness of connections to real society, aiming to create new concepts, technologies, and value.

With the advent of generative AI and foundation models, this field is advancing at an unprecedented speed. In an era where anyone can use advanced AI, research that pioneers "beyond that" is increasingly demanded. Sensing, understanding, and interacting with the real world—our laboratory believes that as AI extends beyond computers into the real world, the role of our technology will become ever more significant. Through research activities, we hope you get to know yourself and find something you can engage with passionately by leveraging your characteristics.

At the Aoki Laboratory, we basically proceed with one research theme per person. This reflects the many challenges to tackle and, most importantly, our hope that each individual takes responsibility and engages proactively with meaningful research themes. You may wonder if you can handle it alone and feel uneasy. However, the laboratory has members with diverse personalities and talents nearby. By actively approaching and discussing with them, you can gain various ideas and hints. Good research is never done in isolation.

Advancement in this field literally progresses day by day. It is important to have the sensitivity to sense these trends and the proactive attitude to firmly and aggressively acquire core technologies as your mainstay.

What is required to conduct research at the Aoki Laboratory is,

  • A reasonable grasp of fundamental mathematics and physics,
  • An interest in computer vision and artificial intelligence systems,
  • Not being deterred by programming,
  • A positive, motivated attitude toward research,
  • And a spirit of self-improvement while interacting with fellow members.

These qualities are essential.

A distinctive feature of our research field is that young researchers, including graduate students, play an active role.
Age does not matter for excellent and groundbreaking technologies. Please fully demonstrate your flexible creativity and inventiveness.
The Aoki Laboratory has the environment and personnel to support you. Many working professionals pursuing their PhDs are enrolled, striving to publish papers at top international conferences and journals. Even under these circumstances, we constantly consider how to improve laboratory activities. We look forward to conducting new research with you.
